  • Overview: Bangalore Rural district is one of the 31 districts in Karnataka, India. It was formed in 1986 when Bangalore District was divided into Bangalore Rural and Bangalore Urban. The district headquarters is in Doddaballapura. The district has 4 talukas: Devanahalli, Nelamangala, Doddaballapura, and Hoskote, and is administered by 66 Village Panchayats, 3 Town Municipal Councils, and 2 City Municipal Councils.
  • Population: According to the 2011 Census of India, Bangalore Rural district has a population of 990,923 with 21.65% living in urban areas, making it the second least populous district in Karnataka. The district covers an area of 2,298 km².
  • Geography: The district has 20 hoblies, 294 villages, 3 towns, and 2 tier-three cities. It is endowed with agricultural and horticultural crops such as ragi, rice, groundnut, sugarcane, castor, grapes, and mulberry.
  • History: In September 2007, the taluks of Kanakapura, Ramanagara, Magadi, and Channapatna were merged to form Ramanagara district. There is a proposal by the Government of Karnataka to rename Bangalore Rural district to Kempe Gowda.
  • Demographics: The district has a population density of 430 inhabitants per square kilometer. From 2001-2011, the population growth rate was 16.02%. Hindus make up 89.86% of the population, Muslims 9.31%, and Christians 0.54%. Kannada is spoken by 71.67% of the population, Telugu by 12.84%, and Urdu by 9.22%.
  • Economy: The district is primarily agricultural but has seen industrialization due to its proximity to Bangalore and the advent of Special Economic Zones. It has scope for industrialisation, dairy development, and sericulture. There are adequate infrastructural facilities such as transport and communications, banking, credit, and marketing.
